It’s always a good battle and friendly rivalry between Waiakea teammates Trevor Hirata and Shon Katahira, who pushed each other during the Big Island Interscholastic Federation season and continue that trend in the offseason.

Hirata, the BIIF champion and upcoming junior, and Katahira, a soon-to-be sophomore, are tied for 31st place after the first round of the Hawaii State Junior Golf Association’s Callaway Junior World Qualifier on Saturday at the Waikoloa Kings’ Course after each shot a 5-over 77.

Other BIIF golfers in the boys 15-17 age division are Kamehameha upcoming junior Preston Ching, tied for 54th at 9-over 81, and teammate Kalai Pomroy, an upcoming sophomore, tied for 62nd at 10-over 82.

Following are other Big Island golfers:

Girls 13-14: Kaley Ann Saludares, 44th, 7-over 79; Kaelyn Uchida, tied 100th, 22-over 94.

Boys 13-14: Pono Yanagi, 77th, 13-over 85; Luke Brilhante, 102nd, 28-over 100.

Girls 11-12: Millburn Ho, tied 31, 5-over 77; Lacey Uchida, 77th, 13-over 85; Tia Kualii, 89, 16-over 88; Mari Ebersole, tied 95th, 20-over 92

Boys 11-12: Isaiah Kanno, 24th, 4-over 76; Ethan Hironaga, tied 44, 7-over 79; Riley Kaneshiro, tied 74, 12-over 84; Dillon Ah Chong, 71st, 11-over 83; Aidan Jomei Oki, tied 82, 14-over 86; Riku Omata, 94th, 19-over 91

Girls 9-10: Kiersten Saludares, 7-over 79; Kailey Oki, tied 54, 9-over 81; Michiko Ejima, 95th, 20-over 92.

Boys 9-10: Dysen Park, 54th, 9-over 81; Jason Kurizaki, tied, 38-over 110

The second round is Sunday, and the the Callaway Junior World Golf Championships are July 14-18 in San Diego.
